The Fame Game

Why are we fixated on these trashy stories? We’re in a recession people. Why do we care about which Orange County housewife is getting a divorce? We should be focused on the war in Iraq; the poverty at home;homelessness, child abuse—the list goes on. Instead, we sit glued to the television sets or our computer screens, like gossipy geese, giving attention to these baseless and plainly ridiculous stories.
The latest media blitz seems to be over Levi Johnston’s Playgirl nudie pictures. Do we all really want to see this 19-year-old’s scrawny, pre-pubescent-looking goods? Why do we care? Some people like to see it for the pleasure of seeing such young flesh—think- the cougar audience. Some just like to see this downward spiral of a once-promising youth. And some, with a more left wing political mindset, will undoubtedly use this as an opportunity to point the (middle) finger at Sarah Palin: Look what your grandchild’s father is doing these days.
The stupidity of people is getting so much air time that we in society are beginning to tolerate and accept a lower intelligence level from each other. There is no way I would ever even talk to Heidi Montag if I ran into her at a store, let alone listen to her for 10 minutes on Good Morning America talk about her plastic surgery and her music. She sings after all; didn’t you know? How is this news? Heidi has nothing interesting to say or to sing. No one cares that she has made herself look like a 40 year old drag queen on a good day. The same goes for Howard Stern and whether he will be an American Idol judge. This shouldn’t be news. There is no place for this mindless drivel in the same segment as the deaths in Haiti.
Come on people, let’s shake ourselves sane! Let’s quit giving these people their 15minutes of fame and hopefully they will just go away. Hopefully.
