People in Glass Houses.....
So how do we all feel about the Tiger Woods apology? Do we care? And more importantly, should we?
We’ve all seen heroes fall from grace – tragic heroes, we might call them. From the way the media covers these falls, it’s as if we revel in their tragic tumbles or at least should. This has always rubbed me the wrong way, to say the least. All the major news networks covered the mea culpa as if it was a matter of national security. CNN and Fox News are still talking about it almost eight hours later. All the online gossip and newspaper sites are overflowing with people adding their two cents.
So here are mine:
I admit that I tuned in at work. I wanted to see what Tiger would say, if he would shed any tears and most importantly, if Elin would be there.
But here’s the main issue: the answer to any of those questions is irrelevant. It doesn’t matter. Tiger is a human being first and a golfer second.
To err is human, right?
The Bible quotes, “people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” and “let he who is without sin cast the first stone” come to mind. What Tiger did should be only a matter between him and his wife and his conscience. How he rises above this scandal is his personal journey and will be something only he will have to endure.
Anything off the golf course should not concern people. Not even his teammates. What matters should only be how Tiger plays golf and his accomplishments and even failures on the golf course—not in the bedroom.
As we’ve seen with other public figures, these scandals will only be blips on the screen. The idolizing public, the same public who is castigating and flogging Tiger, will quickly love him again if he wins the Masters. There are plenty of examples of this: Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson were both “scandal” ridden with women. Kate Moss stumbled from grace with a nasty coke obsession. Mel Gibson had a drunken night with a DUI crash and a religiously charged rant. We forget these things.
Maybe we ought to quickly forget about Tiger. The accident is over and cleared. Let’s stop looking and speculating about nothing and get moving.
