Supreme Gesture

For anyone who has tried to get a book published or a screenplay made into a movie, the process is anything but smooth. Often times, thousands of scripts are sent out to people and one hears absolutely nothing in reply. In those rare instances that something is sent back, it’s usually a frigid rejection letter. Not so for the lucky Daniel Turkewitz.

Daniel sent out his script for a comedy movie about Maine seceding from the United States to become part of Canada. He sent his script to 10 active and retired Supreme Court justices including Sandra Day O’Connor asking how the court might respond to such an issue. She didn’t respond, but Antonin Scalia did!

Scalia
wrote that he couldn’t “imagine that such a question could ever reach the Supreme Court. To begin with, the answer is clear. If there was any constitutional issue resolved by the Civil War, it is that there is no right to secede.”

So far, Scalia is the only justice to respond.

Despite the response, Daniel is still seeking an agent.
