Always the East Target

I love my right to free speech. In fact, I exercise it too often, as some would say. However, some people’s right to free speech should be revoked.

Ok, no—let’s not get hysterical—maybe not revoked, just suspended—and yes, today it’s ONLY because it bothers me terribly.

Comedy Central is the latest to fall prey to my unsolicited two cents.Despite the fact that they censor every image of the prophet Muhammad on “SouthPark,” the network has decided to make an entirely new animated show centered on Jesus. Brilliant double standard there Comedy Central!

Give me a break. For lack of a better way of putting it: leave Jesus alone!

Apparently the network will be announcing “JC,” a cartoon showing Jesus wanting to escape the shadows of his “powerful but apathetic father” and live a normal life in NYC. God, the father, is supposed to be addicted to video games and entirely ignores his son. Sounds really stupid to me and completely un-funny (is that even a word? You get my point).

Who makes up this garbage? How about a cartoon about Buddha or Moses or, dare I say, Muhammad? Oh, right, Comedy Central, you’ve already disallowed any mention of Muhammad on your shows. Let’s all just leave religion alone. We have too many other topics where we should and could stick our noses into.

Is religion the only thing left for Comedy Central to poke fun at?

In defense of itself, the network has said that comedy always makes some people uncomfortable. That’s a pretty lame excuse. It goes beyond making someone uncomfortable—in fact, it’s about directly poking fun at a group’s core set of beliefs. Only Christians believe in Jesus and believe that God is the father. Further, the attack on God the father of Jesus is an attack and insult on the Catholic belief in the Holy Trinity.

Surely, Comedy Central could do a show about, oh say, Tiger Woods, Obama, Spenser and Heidi Pratt. The possibilities are endless.

Making a comedy show about Jesus is about as funny as the Gulf of Mexico oil spill or the Iraq war. Yep, those are real funny.
